The cliffs near the old pier are very steep. This emergency ladder is
provided as an escape from the incoming tide. By this point we were 3/4 of the way up the ladder, then we realised
it had rusted away at the top and was no longer connected to the rock-face!

The old pier is one of the finest in the country. It would be a joy
to behold, if it wasn't in such a poor state of repair. The problem is that piers just aren't a
practical idea - big lumps of iron and the sea don't mix well, but this is one
of the best examples. |
