Whitby - September 2003

We spent a family holiday staying in the North Yorkshire Moors, not too far from Whitby. Whitby itself is beautiful place with a lovely little harbour and nice little town, with the Abbey high above on the hill. There are some photos of the harbour here, together with a few from the abbey and a couple more from the North York Moors Railway (yet again) as I popped in there one day during the week.

Whitby Harbour

Whitby Harbour is a wonderful little bustling harbour with fish and chips and boat trips. what more could you want? A long 'pier' (actually a breakwater)? A lighthouse? Those are all provided as well.

From the sea end of the pier looking towards the elegant little lighthouse.

Looking back out towards the sea and the navigation light on the end of the pier.

The pier in silhouette, with the abbey just visible on the hill behind. You can see that the base of the pier is solid and it's actually a breakwater forming the harbour.

This is the view from the top of the lighthouse situated half-way along the pier / harbour quay/ breakwater. You can go up the lighthouse on busy weekends for a small fee.

The navigation light on the end of the pier. Taken from a boat approaching the harbour.

Whitby Abbey

There are three options for getting to the abbey; you can drive up, take the bus, or walk up the very steep steps from the harbour, up the cliff. We choose the bus.

The North York Moors Railway

If you've visited my other pages, you'll realise that I've been here a few times before, but it's always worth another visit. This time we took a look at the maintenance sheds at Grosmont.
